NO POLITICAL PARTY IS PERFECT, BUT SOME ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS

BABETTE FRANCIS

I have had concerns about the Australian Christian Lobby ever since the "debate" they organized between John Howard and Kevin Rudd prior to the Federal elections in November 2007.

This meeting was widely publicized and relayed to churches and pastors around the nation. Although questions were invited from the public, not a single question on abortion was allowed by ACL. When I asked Rob Ward, ACL's Victorian representative, why no questions on abortion were permitted, he said if they had allowed questions on abortion there would not have been time for much else.

As abortion is the defining moral issue of our time it would have been great if the meeting had focused entirely on this topic.

Furthermore, ACL did not highlight the differences between Howard and Rudd - that Howard has a consistent pro-life voting record while Rudd is pro-choice and voted for the abortion drug RU 486. Nor did ACL mention that the ALP has a pro-abortion policy in its platform while the Coalition does not. A political pretence that the major parties are morally equivalent is not acceptable.
