HELPING MOTHERS

Not satisfied with their efforts to release  human pesticide  RU486  in a relentless drive to kill  unborn babies,   abortion advocates are   now vociferously demanding that   the $50 million the  Federal Government has allocated to a 24-hour Pregnancy  help hot line to reduce the number of abortions in this country    be  also made available to abortion providers,  their legions in family planning associations and “women’s health” activists.

Currently the government gives $15 million to Family Planning Australia, an organisation which supports permissive lifestyles, provides contraceptives and recommends   abortion, but does not promote  abstinence.  The government gives only $250,000 to the Australian Federation of Pregnancy Support Services, so the new   $50 million  and Medicare number for counselling is a welcome initiative.

During the RU486 debate, both sides agreed that the number of abortions was too high and that a decrease would be welcome  -  or at least the  RU486 advocates pretended they would welcome a reduction.  So why are they now demanding that some of the pregnancy counselling funds be given to pro-abortion counsellors?  The excuse they use (in an unpublished National Health & Medical Research document  written by a panel of  “expert” abortion lobbyists) is that pregnancy support services are “false providers” because they do not recommend  all options, i.e. do not refer for abortions.

To label  as “false providers” the dedicated women and men who give  their time, energy and money to work in pregnancy support services  is outrageous.  These volunteers  spend hours listening to and helping women and young girls, and directing them to financial assistance and medical care.  They have helped with  domestic chores, transport, and provided clothing and baby equipment.  They have even raised loans to help with serious financial difficulties.

Some of the women they have helped have come back -  to show off  their babies  and thank the counsellors.  Those who have made the decision to have an abortion have been assured that  post-abortion counselling and support  will be available, either immediately or in the long term.  Many of these women have also come back - or joined  groups  dealing with post-abortion   grief and depression.

When did an abortion provider ever put his hand in his pocket to help a desperate pregnant woman with a loan?  Did he ever offer help with accommodation?   All an abortion provider ever does is offer to kill your baby  - and don’t forget to bring your Medicare card, your blood    group (in case you need a transfusion) and so many dollars in cash.

When the no-longer pregnant woman leaves the abortion clinic, she still has all the same problems of poverty, lack of job or education, lack of housing or being in an unsupportive relationship.  Abortion has resolved none of these issues, but has created a host of new physical and psychological problems.

Not to be overlooked in all this is the role of the population control lobby.  Diane Proctor, head of Family Planning Australia, who attended the UN International Conference on Population & Development in Cairo, 1994, set up the Australian Reproductive Health Alliance,  which in conjunction with New Zealand Family Planning produced a Population Pack for schools.  This pack tells teachers and students how overpopulated the world is, and  how babies are a  threat to prosperity.  Diane Proctor has persuaded some politicians to form the All Party Parliamentary Group on Population and Development.  Many of this group voted for RU486.

The government’s pregnancy counselling funding will be worthwhile provided it does not fall into the clutches of the abortion brigade.
