Prayer

All life comes from You, God, and is precious in your sight.  We pray Father that  those chosen to counsel pregnant women will be conscious of their responsibility to the mother and the unborn child.   We ask that they will have wisdom and compassion and that a large number will be Christians.  Nothing is impossible with You, Father God, if we have faith to believe.  We ask in Jesus name, Amen

May he rest in peace:  Fr. Laurie Cusack, a great pro-life priest and friend of Endeavour Forum Inc.

MY SAY

Judges need experience

By Charles Francis

Andrew Bolt’s article “Law wears a dress” (March 1) is most timely in drawing attention to some of the worst features of Attorney-General Rob Hulls’ approach to the judicial system

For more than 130 years Victorian judges were mostly appointed from more senior members of the Bar. This was simply a matter of common sense.

It was only by practicing in our courts for many years that lawyers became familiar with the manner in which litigation should be conducted and how judges should perform their duties. By this means Victoria achieved high judicial standards, winning world-wide respect.

Anyone appointed a judge without this necessary background starts at an enormous disadvantage. This has already been demonstrated in our County Court where in my opinion some judges with little or no court experience have sometimes proved unsatisfactory.

In particular, activist judges are not only inconsistent with the proper functioning of a democracy, but gradually destroy respect for the legal system itself.
